I've searched the forum for details of how to abandon a planet and I see the menu panel from which an abandonment can be done. But I'm unclear about details. What becomes of buildings and defenses? Is there a way to convert these (which may represent a large expenditure of resources) back to resources, or relocate the buildings/defenses to a second planet in the process of abandoning the first?

its time consuming, but yes. There is a destroy button when you click next to the upgrade in the build menu. This takes time to do and will recover a portion of the resources spent. As for abandoning, you need to select that planet. To get it show up, try refeshing browser or clearing your cache. Once its selected, you need to go to overview and then click settings, then it will give you option to abandon, enter password to confirm and its abandoned.

Anything on a regular planet you abandon will be lost.
You can recover some resources spent on buildings, as NibblesDaCat says, but defenses cannot be deconstructed or relocated.

have looking for a way to abandon a planet. Not seeing anything on any of the available menus. CUrrently from overview there is not a settings option Looked under the options menu and there is not a choice to abandon planet that I can see.

Spuzzana, use planet's picture with small “tools” icon on it:

This will open planet management page, where you can rename or abandon your current planet.
