Stations doesn't produce resources, so they are basically made to store resources and fleets, and to build special units. So then, these are basically made to be strategic elements and should be able to move. Moving them would allow to stablish bases of operation along the frontiers of aliances, depots around strategic planets, etc. This feature can be approached in two ways:
a) These Teleport. The downturn for player is the cold down time before a new jump. The longer the jump more Vestene consumed, and longer time to cold down.
b) These travel normally. The downturn could be, slow movement, unable to jump on gates or trampolines, and by this limitation having to consume a lot of Vespene. In the case they could move normally instead of teleport, these should be visible all the time and being able to be attacked on route, to avoid being used as transports to save fleets and resources.

On the other hand, could fit better for stations to consume an Asteroid slot than a Colony slot. Colony slots are more suited for elements with fixed coordinates. This way, the players could personalize its gameplay, choosing between asteroids that give resources, stations that are strategical, or other entities...
Adding to that, I have seen diferent shapes of station in the game, this feature could be exploited opening the possibility to collect the diferent stations, and receive a medal for that. Diferent stations could have diferent functions or bonuses, perhaps some station could act like a defense fleet in orbit of a planet (and have a defensive boost by the use of Hidrarians, others only could have storage buildings and shipyards.
I've found also that in stations are constructed buildings from all three races. Some are unused and useless depending on your race, destroying them gives nothing in return. This could be fixed, having one of the two approaches:
a) You got all the buildings required on the station prebuilt at least level 1 and these cannot be totally destroyed. There are stations from three races, so you receive the buildings from the race you have captured the station, and these buildings interact with the player's race as would do their own.
b) You can build your own buildings as normal, but the others present on the station give you some bonus or something related to the race they belong.
